Stardom Staray S2-U Biometric Finger Print Reader 2.5" IDE Caddy features Biometric Finger Print Authentication, is what this is all about.
It's basically a 2.5" IDE Caddy with a belt & braces approach to security.
OK Biometrics has been around a while now, and it basically involves scanning a part of the human anatomy that's unique to every individual person, such as the iris in your eye or a finger print. With me so far? good.

So this has fingerprint reader biometrics. Simply put you pass your chosen digit of the reader on top of the caddy and hey presto it lets you in to your documents.

But, there's more besides, the software that it supplied with the unit also allows you to store and check e-mails on the move (you enter the settings for either Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook, and plug your Startay into any internet connected PC and you can check your e-mails) and you can also take your browser with you too, well you can take Internet Explorer with you. It works exactly the same way as IE on your PC, you can store your favourite links and browse via any Internet connected PC. As an add-on to this, any site where you need to log into, you can save these too, your details will be stored on the Hard Drive securely of course.
All this is acheived because the software runs from the Hard Drive in the caddy itself, so its smart and can remember things. Unlike me.

There are a few other applications that come with it. Such as Secure Document Area, a synchronised copy of My Docs from your main PC and Personal Back Up which as the name suggests backs up your personal data from your main PC. All in all its like having a laptop without actually having a laptop.

Word of caution, when you stop using the Staray caddy, make sure you exit the software from the system tray (near the clock on the task bar) and stop the device from running, using Safely Remove Hardware.

To set up the caddy you need to install the supplied software, which will take you through the steps needed to get the unit up and running. I have to mention that the drive is formatted and cleared of all data during the set up process. You also get to stroke the caddy 3 times for the fingerprint recognition set up. You can also store upto 10 different fingerprints, which allows multiple users to access the drive, or your own 10 digits.
