PC CD DVD ROMs

We heard the music from the home Hi-Fi, and we wanted to stick them in our new fangled computers. We wanted to replace our LP-ROM drives with CD-ROM's. When they now humble CD-ROM appeared on the scene it allowed us to see, hear and interact with the world by being able to listen to music at our desk's, or by being able to install interactive software such as Encyclopaedias. Plus for more mundane uses such as installing office applications, instead of feeding endless 3.5" floppy disks into the PC you could insert 1 single disk that contained all the things you needed. The men in white coats were especially pleased with themselves over this single application. As we were.

DVD-ROM's offer the next step to CD-ROMs, not only will a DVD disk hold more information, the a DVD ROM will read both CD's & DVD's. So you can have the best of both worlds. The only slight down side, that is of little concern these days is the read speed. A DVD-ROM will read up to 16 speed on a DVD and up to 48/50 speed on a CD.
And lo it came to pass that in 1979 someone possibly in a white coat holding a clip board decided that the time was right to dispense with vinyl and make something a touch more hard wearing. The said white coated people working for a coalition formed from both Philips and Sony created a digital audio disc, that we all know and love. Things then moved on a bit from there, firstly recordable CDs and then DVD's. See IconUK can even provide a bit of History to your shopping. If you'd like some more history have a look at the Bluetooth Section, there's more history to be had there.
