By using a single cartridge style technology (which basically means that you replace a single cartridge when it runs out, see clever people in white coats again being allowed to think) if your Tri-Colour cartridge runs out for example, you then simply replace the offending cartridge, and tell it not to run out of ink so quickly next time. HP cartridges use Pigment or Dye based ink in their cartridges. HP original Tri-Colour ink cartridges normally use pigment based, and colour ink cartridges normally use dye based.
