Canon Pixma printers primarily use two technologies to make ink appear on paper. Firstly “Microfine Droplet technology” (how the ink is applied to the paper) and secondly “Single Ink Technology” (which basically means that you replace a single ink cartridge when it runs out) so if your Black cartridge runs out you simply replace the offending cartridge, and tell it not to run out of ink so quickly next time. Canon cartridges either use Pigment based or Dye based. Canon original black cartridges normally use pigment based ink, and colour cartridges normally use dye based ink. Compatible and remanufactured cartridges usually use dye based ink in both black and colour.
